Alex Duke Sawyer is the protagonist of Monster Crown: THE COMIC. He is an aspiring Monster Tamer who wins the rare but temperamental Dracoyle in a comic book prize draw. Though he first appeared in Monster Crown: One Day, the two incarnations are separate.

Personality

In 001, Alex is an energetic teenager who admits his own rebellious streak to The Courier. He is curious and open minded, and is more than willing to approach the young Dracoyle. He has an immense appetite for adventure and sets his sight on the faraway Humanism Kingdom. In 002, he shows a distaste towards senseless violence, demanding that Dracoyle stop his brutal assault against Walerus, deeming it as already dead.

In 000, Alex is a much more hardened warrior, and is spurred on to fight against even the most powerful opponents and against the worst odds. He puts everything on the line with an experimental Atomic Clock that could just as easily kill its target as it does transform it. He shows a disregard for his physical safety by going head-first into an Inferno attack, and launches an aerial Dragon Tackle directly at Bant.

Appearance

In 001, Alex is a young man of about 5'6". He wears a black t-shirt with a red leather jacket with the collar raised. He wears dark blue baggy pants and brown leather boots. He is given a cowboy's hat originally belonging to Django Duke Sawyer in the same chapter. He has unruly blonde hair and bright blue eyes.

Alex's appearance in the Prologue, 000, is more or less the same but with some differences. He is missing his hat, and his pants are slightly lighter in colour, and his jacket bears some slight tailoring differences and he also wears a white t-shirt instead of a black one. His boots also feature a pointed toe instead of a rounded toe. He has a long-since healed scar running across his right cheek, and his hair is longer. His eyes have also taken on the appearance of three concentric circles. It is unknown what caused this change to his eyes.

Abilities

In 000, Alex shows a distinct command over Synergy, able to trigger the Crowned Phenomenon on a dime to transform Dracoyle into its Brute-type form. He also shows a complete disregard for personal safety, choosing to lunge into a Dragon Tackle with Dracoyle himself. He also seems apparently immune to the effects of Inferno, and can leap superhuman heights. He can also survive incredible Dark Magic attacks and impacts into solid marble pillars relatively unharmed. What exactly allows him to perform these feats is currently unknown.

Monsters

Alex has only been shown with one monster so far; Dracoyle. In the Prologue, we witness its transformation into its fully matured form. It is known to have been able to use both Inferno and Dragon Tackle techniques.

Dracoyle seems to be easily distracted, and is especially enamoured with nature. He was distracted by a butterfly in his fight with a wild Primigon and was further found picking at a flower at the end of 001.

During Dracoyle's fight with the Walerus in 002, he instantly purged all of his baby fat to strengthen his muscles. The change would give Dracoyle enough power to hold on to Walerus' tail and even break its horn with one hand. Additionally, his wings were also freed from their skin-covering, allowing Dracoyle to fly for a short time.

Trivia

  • Alex was inspired by the characters Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist and Guy Shishiou from The King of Braves: GaoGaiGar
